cudaError_enum - Aborted

Postby aforce » Tue Aug 16, 2011 9:37 am

I have a problem after installation of Jacket:

>> A = grand(16,16);
>> B = grand(16,16);
>> A = B
is ok,
but

>> A(:,1) = B(:,1)

gives an error:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'cudaError_enum'
Aborted

Do you have any ideas what is the problem ?

aforce,

Thanks for contacting AccelerEyes. Can you give us your system information as described at http://www.accelereyes.com/support/technical_support, so we can gauge your problem better?

aforce,

Some questions below:

- Did you try installing the latest NVIDIA driver for your OS?
- Try running the following NVIDIA GPU Computing SDK examples:
http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-cc-sdk ... eviceQuery
http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-cc-sdk ... ceQueryDrv
http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-cc-sdk ... utionFFT2D
Do these run fine?

We have updated the driver to:

NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 280.13 Wed Jul 27 16:53:56 PDT 2011

and use:
GCC version: gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-8ubuntu4)

[1] Programs that you suggested to test - work fine.
[2] The version of Jacket v1.7.1 (build 58de35b) works fine

Unfortunately in Jacket v1.8 (build 6b0319d) operations such as:

A = grand(16,16);
B = grand(16,16);
A(:,1) = B(:,1)

does not.

ANY OTHERS SUGGESTIONS ?

Hi aforce,

There is nothing obviously wrong with the problem you mention, especially on a linux machine.
However Jacket 1.8.1 has been released and can be downloaded which fixed some known issues on *windows*.

if Jacket 1.8.1 does not fix your problem, please answer the following questions

1) IS the code failing by itself or after running some other code ?
2) Are you using gselect before running the code ?

We have already installed Jacket 1.8.1, however command gactivate obtained such an error :
Welcome to Jacket: The GPU Engine for MATLAB!

Verifying Installation ....

Is Jacket gpu_entry.mex file found? .... OK
Is the driver version correct? .... OK
Is jlicense.dat license file found? .... OK

Testing Jacket license and runtime ....

Jacket v1.8.1 ( Build b6ad379) by AccelerEyes
License Type: Designated Computer (on 64-bit Linux)

Licensed Addons: DLA, SLA
Multi-GPU: Not Available

Detected CUDA-capable GPUs:

GPU0 GeForce GTX 580, 1536 MB, Compute 2.0 (single,double) (in use)
GPU1 GeForce GTX 580, 1536 MB, Compute 2.0 (single,double)

GPU Memory Usage: 1466 MB free (1536 MB total)

CONGRATULATIONS, JACKET IS ACTIVE AND READY TO USE!

Note, if you need to upgrade from a trial license to a
purchased license, select the Host ID below of your most
stable network interface. Then paste the Host ID into the
Manage Licenses page (https://www.accelereyes.com/licenses)
and download the license. Finally, place the file here:
<jacket_root>/engine/jlicense.dat

Mex file entry point is missing. Please check the (case-sensitive)
spelling of mexFunction (for C MEX-files), or the (case-insensitive)
spelling of MEXFUNCTION (for FORTRAN MEX-files).

JACKET FAILED TO ACTIVATE PROPERLY.

??? Invalid MEX-file '/usr/local/jacket/engine/getmac.mexa64': .

Error in ==> /usr/local/jacket/engine/gactivate.p>print_hostids at 174

Error in ==> /usr/local/jacket/engine/gactivate.p>gactivate at 109

Then we copied the file getmac.mexa64 from the 1.8.0 version and gaactive works fine, but... A(:,1) = B(1,:) still produces an error.

aforce, two separate problems exist here:
(1) the issue with subsref/subsasgn operations

What is the error message you are seeing here? Or do you find the result to be different from expected?

(2) gactivate prints out an error message after indicating that Jacket is ready to use.

I managed to reproduce this problem. I recorded it as a bug - I shall have a fix out for this soon.

I'm aforce's colleague - we work on the same server computer, where jacket is installed.

When I write for example
Code: Select all
A=grand(20,1)
A(20)=3

the matlab crashes without throwing any error-message and without creating any matlab_crash_dump.xxxx file.

Reading a single element of a vector/matrix (or a subset of them) doesn't cause any problem. Troublesome is assigning a new value to chosen elements of a matrix/vector.

I've recorded the situation:

aforce, jpod,

Thanks a lot for your efforts in detailing the error. We are looking into the problem, and we shall post back in a bit with more details. This is being dealt under ticket JKT-2789.

On a different note, we fixed the problem with misleading gactivate error messages.

Hi guys,

I got an update: I could finally reproduce the problem on one of our machines, and I could resolve it on the machine with the fixes put in this nightly build of Jacket: http://www.accelereyes.com/nightly/Jack ... ee3c5b.run. Please download this installer and give this a try.

A while back, we tried to optimize the way subsasgn kernels are compiled, but that seems to be causing aborts in the CUDA toolchain on this specific machine (and your machine as well). We'll be working with NVIDIA over the next few days to identify what is causing this issue. The fix I put out reverts the changes we made to subsasgn compilation.

Let us know how the test with the new installer goes.
